Over the past four years, David has driven a rapid transformation of Penton from a traditional B2B media company to a professional information services business. Under David’s leadership, Penton focused its energy on creating scaled leadership positions in five growth oriented industry sectors, and executed on six strategic acquisitions to anchor these businesses with leading event franchises.
Penton has shifted to a shared services model to drive a capabilities-led strategy across its sectors. The result has been a rapid increase in new product development, with the launch of SaaS workflow products, virtual education, APIs, new events and a rapidly growing marketing services division. The result has been a near doubling in Penton’s profitability, and with it, a massive shift in Penton’s profit source as nearly 90% of Penton’s profit is now generated by its event and digital portfolios.
Before joining Penton, David served as CEO of TNS, North America (a global insights division of WPP). Prior to this, David led Dun & Bradstreet’s Small Business Division. He spent the majority of his career at Time Warner where he served in key leadership roles, including chief executive of both the Parenting Media Group and the Financial Media Group. David holds a MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management (where he served on the Executive Committee of the Alumni Board) as well as a BA in economics from Binghamton University. He sits on the Board of Directors of Penton, Connectiv (the business information division of SIIA) and Pridewear, an athletic wear joint venture with UnderArmour.
Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Nicola has been a key player in driving Penton’s transformation that has resulted in profits doubling over the past five years. He partners with all areas of the business to define and execute an organic and M&A strategy that meets Penton’s growth objectives. He drives ongoing efforts to identify and vet new initiatives and new targets that can add to the existing portfolio of sector coverage and capabilities. He has managed nine successful acquisitions for Penton in the last five years. He is instrumental in integrating new entities into the company to achieve synergies and develop new revenue opportunities. Nicola has played an active role with Penton’s ownership to refinance the capital structure and improve the debt ratings over time.
Prior to Penton, Nicola worked at Primedia in various positions including senior vice president, strategy and operations, and vice president, planning and analysis. Over the course of his career, Nicola has held finance positions in both startups and public companies including Downtown Music, Brill Media Ventures, HBO and Ernst & Young. He earned a BA from Princeton University and an MBA from Columbia University.
Group President, Food & Agriculture
Dan leads and drives Penton’s food-to-fork business. Dan runs Penton’s Agriculture group, the largest and most diversified agriculture information business in North America. He was a key player in evaluating, scoping and acquisition of Farm Progress. Dan has successfully integrated Farm Progress into Penton’s Ag group delivering significant revenue to both top and bottom line while maintain top talent. Bagan also runs Nation’s Restaurant News, the leading information insight and event brand in the multi-unit foodservice operators market. He led the acquisition of Nation’s Restaurant News from Lebhar-Friedman, integrating the franchise into Penton’s Restaurant Group along with Restaurant Hospitality and Food Management forming the largest food service group in industry. Dan is also responsible for Supermarket News, the leading national trade product for the food retailing and distribution industry. In addition, Dan manages Penton’s Meetings properties and was responsible for the portfolios migration to all-digital. Bagan has developed and delivered successful digital products and events across multiple markets. Prior to Penton, Dan was vice president/group publisher of the Business Retail Group of Fairchild Publications, a division of Conde Nast Publications.
Group President, Aviation, Finance, Sustainability & SmartReach
Warren runs Penton’s Aviation Group, the largest and most powerful targeted marketing platform for companies and executives in the dynamic and growing global aviation industry. In addition, Warren manages the Wealth Management, Commercial Real Estate, Waste and Sustainability and Penton SmartReach groups, and is involved in the company’s acquisitions, business development and strategy. He has been with Penton and its predecessor companies, Primedia Business and Prism Business Media since 2001. Prior to this position, Warren was vice president, investor relations for Primedia Inc. from 1997 to 2001, and held a similar position with TRINOVA Corporation from 1985 to 1996. Formerly, as a partner in the firm Corporate Annual Reports, Inc., he conceptualized and wrote corporate literature and annual reports for dozens of Fortune 500 companies.
Group President, Lifestyle & Penton Exhibition Services
Considered a thought leader in the industry, Fred runs New Hope Network in the burgeoning natural products marketplace. Fred is an expert in natural products and the health and wellness arena and has a passion for the industry and its mission. Fred’s industry relationships are deep, which allows him to understand where all of the companies and products fit together, how they are trending and gives him direct access to the top leaders in the industry who look to him as a sounding board. He was instrumental in the development of Penton’s data and insight products for the natural products industry. Fred also runs Penton Event Services supporting all Penton best in class events. In addition, Fred is responsible for Club Industry, LDI and the newly acquired World Tea Media assets. Fred serves on several boards including SISO and the Company Council of IADSA (International Alliance for Dietary Supplement Associations). In the past he served on the boards of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, The Coalition to Preserve DSHEA, Bastyr University, and The Dietary Supplement Education Alliance. In addition to New Hope and the Penton Exhibitions Services team, Fred oversees Club Industry and Live Design. Prior, he was employed with Meredith Corporation, Capital Cities/ABC and Universal Media.
Group President, Industry
A creative leader with a keen ability to grow businesses, Paul leads Penton’s Industry Group where he is responsible for a broad portfolio that includes energy and buildings, design engineering and sourcing and manufacturing and supply chain markets. Paul had a long, successful career with UBM where he held several leadership positions. Most recently, Paul was the CEO of UBM Tech and drove the business unit into digital content and services, as well as international expansion into Asia, Latin America and Europe. He started his career with Reed Business Information. Paul is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (MCiM) and a board member of the Business Marketing Association.
Group President, Infrastructure
With extensive leadership experience, Sanjay is responsible for Penton’s data and insight strategy as well as driving its strategic direction and monetization across key growth initiatives and new markets entry strategies. Sanjay is an expert in creating structure in an organization by building the right talent, process and identifying product gaps. Sanjay oversees Penton’s Technology group, which includes a group of websites and events aimed at the professional technology market, Penton’s Marketing Services Group, which provides an array of integrated solutions for marketers, including content creation, lead generation, and campaign optimization solutions, as well as the Automotive and Trucking groups, which serve as the business-information hub for the automotive and trucking industries. Sanjay has spent most of his career in technology, including positions at Gartner, Xerox, and Anixter. He also held leadership positions focused on serving technology clients at GfK and TNS.
Senior Vice President Human Resources
Kurt oversees the Human Resources function for Penton. In this capacity, he is responsible for all efforts to attract, retain and develop Penton’s talented employees. Specifically, he is responsible for all employee-related programs at Penton including talent acquisition, compensation, benefits administration, performance management, employee relations, employee recognition, training and development. Kurt provides coaching, strategic advice and counseling for managers and employees alike covering issues ranging from organizational planning to performance management to career development.
Kurt has deep roots with the organization having joined PRIMEDIA’s business-to-business unit (a predecessor company to Penton) in 2000. Previously, he held the role of Vice President, Human Resources with BlackRock, a financial services company in New York City, where he was instrumental in growing the employee base from 150 to 800 employees and helped guide the HR aspects of a successful IPO. Kurt held previous HR roles with Osprey Ship Management, a defense contracting firm in the Washington D.C. area.
Senior Vice President & General Counsel
Andrew serves as a business and legal strategist and tactician providing guidance, insight, direction, and hands-on support for the Penton’s enterprise. Applying his extensive legal, business, executive management experience and integration expertise, Andrew is responsible for all of the company’s legal matters, transactions and contracts, including his central role in the development and execution of Penton’s M&A activity. He is dedicated to driving Penton’s organizational change and innovation, forging corporate strategy and policy, improving business practices and processes, leading deal negotiations, and managing risk while fostering growth. At Penton, Andrew has built a top-tier, pro-active, self-reliant in-house legal department providing business-minded, cost-effective legal solutions that promote revenue generation, increase efficiency, protect business interests, and minimize risk. Prior to joining Penton, Andrew was Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel of OCE Interactive, a SaaS financial software and digital technology company. Earlier in his career he was Associate General Counsel at PRIMEDIA and a senior corporate associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Andrew earned a BA from Yale and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Chief Marketing Officer
An innovator with marketing, business development and management experience, Kate has transformed Penton’s marketing culture to a data-driven, modern marketing organization. Kate is responsible for the structure, strategy and execution of Penton’s marketing efforts including branding, user engagement, creative, research and corporate communications. She is also responsible for Penton’s Marketing Services and Monetization opportunities. Kate’s cross-functional marketing team delivers integrated marketing strategies through advanced analytics, marketing automation, digital solutions and creative to support to Penton’s five core growth sectors. Kate established and manages Penton’s Digital Council and Marketing Council. She is also a member of the acquisition integration team. Prior to Penton, Kate had a long history with United Business Media, which included several senior roles including Executive Vice President, UBM and President, UBM Studios. Kate was named to the 2015 Marketing Hall of Femme by Direct Marketing News, Folio’s Top Women in Media Awards program and her team was named CMOs Marketing Team of the Year by the Oracle Markie Awards program.
Chief Product & Technology Officer
A recognized thought leader and change agent who has worked with numerous Fortune 1,000 companies and start-ups, Richard has a proven track record of ensuring a solid strategic direction and accelerating significant revenue growth. He is recognized for building and managing top performing teams. Richard brings a unique combination of skills to Penton that incorporate technical, operational and leadership experience with a deep understanding of data products and digital initiatives. In his role as Penton’s most senior technology and data executive, Richard has been charged with driving maximum value from Penton’s data and digital assets and spearhead development of new data and digital products. Richard oversees the Engineering, Product Management, Design, IT Operations, Data Science and Predictive Analytics teams. Prior to Penton, Richard led advisory engagements with Avagen Ventures. Previously Richard was Chief Executive Officer of Paradigm5 DBA Bintro, Managing Partner at Stanton Walker and Company and VP of Product at GiftCertificates.com. He has also advised the federal government on key critical data initiatives and sits on the Advisory Board of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Information Technology and Web Science program.
Chief Content Officer
Since joining the company, Joe has established a content focus on digital user engagement, which includes explicit content mix initiatives and goals for all industry market sectors, and the establishment of new techniques while championing the development of new product experiences and capabilities to optimize engagement and monetize value. Joe has developed IdeaXchange, a scalable program that enables leading industry experts to share their insightful experiences and ideas in a conversational style that invites digital interactivity around these topics among industry peers. He works with Penton content leaders to reorganize and adjust market content teams with a focus on functions that align with engagement growth strategies. Prior to Penton, Joe served in various key leadership roles at Advance Digital. Earlier, he was a reporter for The Star-Ledger, a writer and executive producer for Time Warner’s Time Daily on AOL, Time.com, Pathfinder and Money.com, and News Editor of NJ.com.
