Director of Marketing
Position Description:
Penton Media, a nationwide leader in business-to-business publishing, has an immediate opening for a team-oriented Director of Marketing to work in our Chicago office for our premier tele- and mobile-communications franchises Telephony (telephonyonline.com) and Mobile Radio Technology (mrtmag.com) magazines.
The Director of Marketing is responsible for managing the Communication Group's lead generation programs and effectively market the Communication Group's portfolio (print, web, email, events, etc.) to our reader and advertiser audience. This individual will collaborate with the Group Publisher to develop and execute the strategic marketing plans as well as manage the marketing budget.
The position responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Develop overall marketing strategy and manage all execution of plans, including management of staff assignments, development of materials, and execution of marketing including placement, campaign management, and reporting of results.
- Directly supervise any marketing coordinator/marketing project manager staff
- Conduct and coordinate market analysis, competitive analysis, lead source analysis and marketing campaign analysis. Draw conclusions and make recommendations to improve effectiveness and efficiency of these programs.
- Work with sales department to develop and execute marketing collateral and programs for advertisers including media kits, sales sheets, and PowerPoint presentations.
- Structure and continuously improve the overall lead generation for advertising programs where leads are tied directly to results - including white papers, web casts, pop-quiz, essential guides, etc. Make recommendations on new sources, program improvements, program changes, and other factors, which might improve existing programs or in creating new programs.
- Manage group participation in all trade shows/events - including staff hotel and event registration, booth/exhibit purchase or barter, booth/exhibit creation and staff management, magazine placement/distribution, hospitality suites, specialty events/parties, and all budget management. Travel to trade shows and/or meetings is required on several occasions each year.
- Manage all barter requests and barter execution including contracts and barter advertising placements.
- Coordinate with editorial and/or custom publishing (other internal Penton groups) departments as necessary for any custom projects relating directly to advertisers and advertiser programs. Where appropriate, manage such projects (TBD in collaboration with Group Publisher and leadership team). Custom projects might include events, white papers, custom magazines, supplements, research, custom web advertising, etc.
- Create and execute any group event marketing or coordinate to market related Penton events - marketing to gain attendance or exhibitors.
- Maintain high-level of deliverable quality while also keeping projects on deadline.
Position Requirements:
To excel in this position, you will need to be a self-starter with at least five-to-seven years sales experience and a broad and in-depth knowledge of developing effective marketing plans from conception to completion to ensure promotional themes and product positioning accurately reflect product goals for the publications, their supplements, website, e-newsletters, web casts, etc. Knowledge of event marketing and project management strongly preferred as well as proficiency in common business applications. Outstanding relationship building, customer service, organization and communication skills are essential.
Travel Requirements:
Travel to trade shows and/or meetings is required.
