Associate Editor (Contractor)

Position Description:
Penton Media, a nationwide leader in business-to-business publishing, has an immediate opening for a team-oriented Associated Editor to work in our Chicago office for a leading industry business publication that covers contractors engaged in plumbing, piping, radiant heating, fire sprinklers, "green" building and other mechanical contracting disciplines for CONTRACTOR magazine.

The Associate Editor collaborates with the Editor to write and edit articles and news stories that appear in the print edition, the e-newsletter, twice-annual Radiant Living magazine, other supplements and annuals in addition to www.contractormag.com , the publication's Web site.

Other responsibilities include:

 

  • Coordinate coverage that appears in the news, features and columnist sections of the print edition.
  • Provide support to Contractor's production editor when the print edition is at the art/production stage. Including, but not be limited to, editing and proof-reading pages, researching and acquiring photos and art, and assisting in the coordination of copy and page flow.
  • Attend major industry events to provide editorial coverage.

Position Requirements:
Qualifications: Internal candidates must be in current position for a minimum of six months.

  • Self-starter who is self-motivated with five years of reporting and editing experience on a monthly publication.
  • Experience in the construction or field-service industries is a plus. Familiarity with energy and water conservation topics and "green" building also a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively - both oral and written. Also possess good typing and listening skills, as well as a good command of the English language, grammar and the Associated Press Stylebook.
  • The ability to understand technology, business and policy topics.
  • Outstanding relationship building and ability to interview sources, organize and write feature articles, news stories and execute good note-taking skills.
  • Proficient in production editing and Quark or, preferably, In-Design. Excel, Word, and Web-based programming preferred.
